maybe they could allow a specific frequency for drone pilots to contact authorities when flying drones. this way there is no interference with pilot com. just a thought!

10 years ago we had a SFOC held up as TC and NAV Canada argued over whether we needed a ROC-A and air radio for an operation close to an international airport. TC wanted us to communicate over air band and Nav Canada said no. I even spoke with a NAV Canada tech who maintained their radio systems and he said it would be pointless from a technical perspective due to distance and equipment. Eventually all agreed on a phone call to tower and monitor the frequency. But wow, it took way longer than it should have to come to that decision. I figured by now everyone involved with rules and regs surrounding this would be on the same page. It's sad that after all that time there are still issues. especially when it's related to safety.

I've spoken to a couple of larger businesses that sell mobile radios to a lot of drone operators and they seem wholly unaware of this being an issue. A mobile unit is not a base station. With a ROC(Maritime), for example, you can operate a handheld VHF but not a land based station.

This was a great tool with a lot of important insight. I watched it through and wrote out everything on the screen in a notebook. I took the test without studying further thinking I would just get my feet wet and prepare to fail but after about 40 minutes I passed! I didn’t see my score anywhere but I am good to go. I only have a Mini 4 Pro but I am grateful for the education👏🏼

Great exposé. This is what happens when process overwhelms purpose. ISED are demonstrating what happens when regulators apply misperceptions and false assumptions to the challenge presented by a new requirement. When Transport Canada has made the need for drone pilots to use aviation radio, in tightly prescribed circumstances, and a reasonable test case has been made, there is no excuse for this situation. I wonder who would be held accountable if an accident occurred because a drone struck an aircraft after it proved impossible to warn of an impending collision in good time.

From the manned side, I'd rather you guys be on the freq with me. If you have a ROC-A and a license you're the same as any other pilot and it's mind boggling that this is an issue.

There are oil field sites in Fort McMurray that have written procedures that require any RPAS Operator on their property to make "blind calls" at the beginning and end of each RPAS operation. Failure to do so is removal from site.

Sure sounds like ISED is purposely dragging their feet on this issue so they don’t have to deal with the reality that drone pilots are actually a thing and do exist. Thank you Don!

it's all beyond ridiculous. Even airport personnel at anything other than major internationals don't go through all of this headache for a vehicle based radio.

Or maybe there is also thought that it is best that Amazing or Wallysmart or whomever doesn't have to train and license their pilots that may or likely will not even exist for their flight operations to come.

TC needs to unf*ck itself, soonest. Drones are here to stay. They're not just toys or aerial tripods. They're also work tools, used in a workspace. Not every drone operator needs a radio, but the few who do should be granted access - on _their_ say-so, not TC's.

Respectfully, the entire canadian drone licensing procedure is a F'g MESS...it's insanity! Government regs and laws are RUINING, destroying Canadians right to enjoy life. The drone licensing is a JOKE, a JOKE. Everyone I know, flies drones, no licenses - they don't care. Look at what the cops are doing - flying into aircraft at Buttonville...make a wager that the cops don't care, they don't get a slap on the wrist, the cops crash drones into aircraft, cause thousands of dollars of damage - who pays...US, the Canadian taxpayer... the drone 'thing' is laughable. Just 1 opinion. What's next, a license to ride a bicycle or to walk the streets? Where does the stupidity end??

While none of this “non-progress” is unsurprising,it’s still pretty irritating. I personally can think of a number of places I fly here in ranching country,that have private airstrips. It’s fairly common to be snuck up on,by very low flying choppers that are (I assume) looking for stock herds in the foothills. I don’t know if I personally would apply for a radio license,but I guess the point is moot since I couldn’t get one anyways!🤣😂

I received my ROC-A in 2017 as a part of my professionnal drone pilot training. It seems it wasn’t difficult to get back then. Since then, I have been mostly listening to aeronautical frequencies during all my missions but frequently transmitting my position, altitude and intentions in class G airspace; I created my own call sign. On top of that, we have been transmitting shamelessly numerous times during all our SFOC advertised events and trust me, it saved the day on a lot of occasions. Manned aircrafts tends to be curious of advertised events and even if they are required by law to maintain 1000 feet over crowds, some rogue pilots just dive into our 0-400 feet field of operation. For sure, we yield way to manned aircraft but we let everybody know our presence. I personally and professionally do not give a flying one about any restrictions Industry Canada would impose on us professionals because we are by far totally right in our intentions to raise the level of safety in the airspace. Once again, Don, you are doing a tremendous and astonishing work by putting authorities noses into their crap. Thank you so much! 🫡

HI Don ...thanks for the update ..YES I AM KEN that you referred to in this piece. First, I have both radio operator certification/licences for Marine and Aircraft so I am very familiar with radio compliance and procedures, Second my main concern and example I used with ISED was that I fly near an "unmanned" airport i.e. Deep River where the manager of the field could be flying in the area and not available to answer a phone call when I was trying to inform him of my flight plan near the airfield. Third: I am amazed that being the original requestor, that I have never been contacted by ISED to be used as a demonstrator or test case as I complied with ALL the requirements to obtain a base license complete with a bonified / safety concern reason to be permitted to operate while in the area of an airport as needed and required.

What’s insulting (to me) is that for the advanced test, the powers that be decided we had to be familiar with radio communications and their frequencies, among a host of other aeronautical concepts that have very stretched relevancy to 99% of actual drone flights. The added kick in the groin is that the current exceptions (emergency personnel) are given to the only group that currently has reported drone collisions with manned aircraft. It’s very hard not to feel like the regulators are not safety oriented, but manned aircraft pilot oriented and just see us as a nuisance they have to deal with.

I did a couple of courses with AlteX Academy including an in person flight review training before taking the flight review. I asked them what they thought of the app and they said it’s good but that looking for controlled/restricted airspace and notams isn’t reliable because it isn’t updated constantly. They said the flight logs and pre flight checklists are good though. I was wondering do you rely on your app for notams and controlled/restricted airspace?

Do you need the Basic RPAS Pilot Certificate before applying for the SFOC?

If you have a Drone that's approved to fly over bystanders, what's the distance you can fly above bystanders? Or is there no limit and it comes down to a personal judgement call?

I have a bunch of DJI drones, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro, AIR 2S, AIR 3, & DJI FPV Drone, all are fly more combos with RC & RC 2 Controllers, I also have the Integra Goggles Motion 2 Combo. I just got the Autel Evo Lite + Premium Bundle on the 18th of this month, & I got the Atom 3 Axis Gimbal Fly More Combo about 10 minutes ago. I only bought the Evo Lite Plus, so I had a decent Drone without Geofencing. I got the Atom for a non Geofenced back up to the Autel. I haven't opened the Autel yet. But I'm going to try out the Atom today lol.

me I'm returning the M832, it has so many problems for printing from A4 in windows, it will print what it wants to , when it wants to and the times it wants to!! because of it,yesterday i spent two hours for printing 15 pages, for me not worth, i'm sending it back to China😅

I've been flying mine without GPS because it toilet bowls a lot. Had a fly off they replaced it. Same issue. Flies pretty good even in some wind without GPS. Aren't there heating devices available at literally every point of sale for $2.⁰⁰ or so? They have a tiny abrasive wheel that is pressed to a spring loaded flint, and a small button to release a steady stream of butane. I've been unable to adjust the temperature settings as I've not yet found the usb port. Careful on/off regulation will achieve optimal temperature without app support.
